Production

Waterfront’s mandate includes the mounting of productions involving those graduating students who have attained a degree of excellence in the work.

Each spring our artistic directors jointly choose one or two projects from the Discovery + Development series for full production. The rehearsal and creation process fully utilize the tools we teach – Meisner, Yat and our fusion of these two great techniques. The productions are directed by our artistic directors and by students in the directing unit.

Discovery and Development

Offering a hands-on practical experience for the students, Discovery + Development is designed to provide directing students an opportunity to choose and explore plays to be considered for full production in the spring, and all students an opportunity to rehearse and perform staged readings for the public.

Any student can submit a project. Our artistic directors review all proposals and create a shortlist. The projects that are chosen become fully rehearsed, staged readings, vehicles for the students to fully exercise their crafts, and for the public to engage in the process of choosing what we produce and to watch the process of exploration, development, rehearsal and production.

Staged readings are held monthly, October through January and are open to the public. These exploratory workshops are directed by staff and students enrolled in Waterfront’s Directing Unit. We select performers from a group of students who have reached a degree of promise and excellence in their work.

Discovery + Development’s structure is the result of Tom’s extensive experience developing and directing new plays in regional theaters across Canada, including his 12 year tenure of 25th Street Theatre, one of Canada’s foremost play and development theatres..

Production

Based on the Discovery + Development program, projects are chosen for full production in the spring of 2018.

These projects are directed by one or both of our artistic directors, Tom and Rachael, and are assisted by students in the Director’s Unit. Aiming to reach the highest standards of professionalism, D + D involves the students who have achieved a specific standard of excellence in the program.
